‘ A classic … a meeting point of zest, pith, colour, fruit, sweetness and acid.’ – Julian Barnes
Some fascinating facts about oranges from Oranges:
- Coolness is what makes an orange orange; in Thailand oranges are green.
- Unlike apples and pears, an orange does not continue to ripen after it is picked.
- Oranges weren’t consumed until the 16th Century, before that they were simply fragrant, ornamental objects.
- Drinking orange juice in the morning is not widespread. Bolivians don’t touch the stuff in the morning, but drink it steadily throughout the rest of the day, and Afghanis use them as seasoning agents.
